The National Arthroplasty Registry of the Malawi Orthopaedic Association (NARMOA) was started by orthopaedic surgeons at Beit CURE International Hospital in Blantyre in 2005 and was moved to LION in 2023.
NARMOA registers all joint replacement surgery performed in Malawi. Quality registries for joint replacement surgery, like NARMOA, are common in high income countries to keep track of the results of these operations, inform best practice, and assure patients are receiving safe, good quality treatment. NARMOA is the only national arthroplasty registry on the African continent.
To date NARMOA has enrolled more than 800 joint replacements which represent almost all the cases ever operated in Malawi. NARMOA is an associate member of the International Society of Arthroplasty Registries (ISAR).
The principal funder of NARMOA in the last 5 years has been the UK based charity - the Sir John Charnley Trust with additional funds from the AO Alliance and Heraeus. NARMOA is overseen by a board of national and international Orthopaedic Surgeons
