LION will offer a comprehensive range of diagnostic, orthopaedic, neurosurgical and rehabilitation services to paying patients. Facilities will include a private outpatient department and a private ward with comfortable ensuite rooms overlooking the Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary.
We have a state-of-the-art emergency department, operating theatres, radiology department, laboratory and a rehabilitation centre to offer our patients a fully integrated point of care service.
LION is run by the LION Trust. All proceeds from the private services at LION go towards running of the facility and ensuring better service for the public patients.
LION Outpatient Department (OPD)
The LION Paying Outpatient Department (OPD) is often the first point of contact as a paying patient. To ensure minimal waiting times for our clients, and to make sure the appropriate doctor is available, a prior appointment is necessary for all paying patients. We do not see walk-in patients without an appointment in the paying OPD.
On arrival you will be greeted at the Paying OPD reception and will be offered tea or coffee in the waiting lounge while you wait for your appointment. We try as hard as possible to keep to the time of your appointment, but from time-to-time examinations and consultations do take longer than planned and cause some delays. We kindly ask for your understanding for this.
The Sanctuary Ward
Welcome to the Sanctuary Ward, LION’s private ward.
We offer comfortable ensuite double rooms overlooking the Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary. The rooms are fully equipped with oxygen and medical monitor systems, flat screen TV and AC. Private patients can pay for the bed, or for the whole room if in need of more privacy.
Radiology
The LION Radiology Department opened in 2023 is the most modern and comprehensive radiology department in the country. The department is fully digital, offering digital x-rays, ultrasound examination, CT, MRI, Ultrasonography, and bone densiometry (DEXA). We have the first ever 1.5 Tesla MRI machine in Malawi. As a paying patient you have access to standard radiology services as well as advanced CT and MRI examinations.
LION also offers bone densiometry (“DEXA examination”) to assess the bone mineral density of your hip and spine to evaluate if you have osteoporosis, or “brittle bones”.
Osteoporosis is common in women after menopause or as a result of use of some medications and increases your risk of fractures. The Radiology department has a comfortable waiting area for our paying clients.
Laboratory
The state-of-the-art LION Laboratory Department performs a wide range of blood tests for paying patients. Our lab has a comprehensive quality management system to ensure the validity of our results.
